About Us
History
DeafGROW was born with a vision to break down barriers and unlock opportunities for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals worldwide. In 2001, with a groundbreaking investment from the Nippon Foundation, RIT/NTID created two pioneering networks: the Postsecondary Education Network-International (PEN-International) and the Pre-College Education Network (P-CEN). These initiatives empowered colleges and universities globally to elevate Deaf education by developing innovative teaching strategies, accessibility services, and state-of-the-art educational technologies.
But as these programs flourished, a stark reality became clear: education alone wasn’t enough. Deaf graduates faced an uphill battle in finding meaningful employment, held back by communication barriers, limited training opportunities, and a lack of employer awareness. In ASEAN countries significantly, employment outcomes for people with disabilities lagged behind.
The pandemic of 2020 was a wake-up call. Job losses hit the Deaf community hard, particularly in service industries. The world changed overnight, demanding new skills, adaptability, and innovative thinking. DeafGROW was created in response to these challenges—a bold step forward to ensure Deaf professionals not only survive but thrive in this new landscape.
The Nippon Foundation’s Support
The Nippon Foundation of Japan has long championed efforts to improve lives worldwide. Its unwavering dedication to Deaf education began decades ago, supporting students from developing countries to study in the U.S.
In partnership with RIT/NTID, the Nippon Foundation funded PEN-International (2001–2011) and P-CEN (2011–2016), transforming educational opportunities for Deaf students. Today, its commitment continues with DeafGROW. Thanks to the Nippon Foundation, we are building two transformative Centers on Employment in the Philippines and Việt Nam—powerful hubs where Deaf individuals can gain the tools, training, and opportunities needed to excel.
How Partnerships Formed
At DeafGROW, change happens when communities come together. That’s why collaboration is at the heart of our work. Through our partnerships with leading institutions in the Philippines and Việt Nam, we are addressing the critical gap between education and employment for Deaf individuals.
Our Centers on Employment are more than just resource hubs; they’re catalysts for transformation. Modeled after RIT/NTID’s award-winning Co-op and Career Center, they provide job seekers with skills training, career counseling, and accessibility resources. Employers are also part of the equation—receiving guidance and tools to create inclusive workplaces.
Each center is supported by an employment advisory board of Deaf leaders, business stakeholders, government representatives, and educators. Together, we advocate for policies, break down stereotypes, and foster long-term change. Within five years, we aim for these centers to stand independently, creating sustainable opportunities for future generations.
Mission
DeafGROW empowers Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to achieve their full potential in education and employment. Through our Centers on Employment in the Philippines and Việt Nam, we aim to:
